Visa Népal Which visa for me?

The visa on arrival

  • 10 min to 1 h 30
  • 15, 30 or 90 days
  • Multiple entry
  • Payable online

Issued at Kathmandu airport, in Pokhara, Bhairahawa and at the land border posts. Nothing is mandatory before you leave, but you can fill in the form and even pay online to save time on the spot: on arrival you then go straight to the immigration desk, exactly as with the eVisa.

Three possible options

Pick an option: the details appear below. The more you do online before leaving, the less time you lose at the airport.

Everything on the spot

You prepared nothing. Everything happens in the airport's immigration hall.

Nothing to do beforehandThree steps on siteCash recommended

Before you leave

  1. Check that your passport is valid at least 6 months after arrival with two blank pages.
  2. Bring US dollars in cash for the visa (30, 50 or 125 USD (≈ €27, €45 or €110)), clean and recent bills. Other major currencies also work, at the day's rate.
  3. Note the address of your first night in Nepal, the form asks for it.

On arrival in Kathmandu

1

The self-service kiosks

The computers are on the right as you enter the hall. You type in your details (identity, passport, address in Nepal, duration), your photo is taken, the machine prints a form with a barcode. This is the longest queue when several flights land at once. The printer sometimes fails: take a photo of the final screen, it is accepted at the payment counter.

10 to 40 min depending on traffic
2

The payment counter

The payment counters are at the far left of the hall. You hand over the form (the duration, 15, 30 or 90 days, was chosen at the kiosk or online) and pay. US dollars in cash preferred; other major currencies accepted at the day's rate, card not always accepted.

5 to 20 min
3

The immigration desk

Passport, form and payment receipt. The officer checks, takes your photo (and sometimes your fingerprints), then sticks the visa in your passport. Check the duration before you walk away.

5 to 15 min

Allow 30 to 90 minutes in total. After a night flight, it can feel long.

This route is perfectly valid and safe. It is just slower than the others.
Overland (India, Tibet): no kiosks and no payment counter, a single immigration counter at the border post. Paper form on the spot, payment in US dollars cash only (small, clean bills), visa stuck in right away. Posts: Kakarbhitta, Biratnagar, Birgunj, Belahiya/Sunauli, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar, and on the Tibet side Rasuwagadhi, Kodari (Tatopani) and Hilsa. The first two Tibetan posts close for several weeks a year after the monsoon (landslides): check before you go. Entered Nepal overland recently? You fill in the official form at home and print it. On arrival, you go straight to the payment counter.

  5. Do not pay at this stage: just close the page.

NepaliPort portal home page
The NepaliPort portal: click “Visa On-arrival”.

First screen: passport country, number, date of birth, then “Proceed”.
The form expires 15 days after it is created. Too early, and you'll redo it at the kiosks.
Overland (India, Tibet): pick the border post as your entry point in the form, print it, and hand it to the single immigration counter at the post with your passport and US dollars in cash. No reliable card terminal, no separate payment counter.

Form and payment online

You fill in the form and pay by card on the official portal. On arrival, a single step.

5 to 15 min

Walk past the kiosks and the payment counter. At the immigration desk: passport, form, receipt. Tested in September 2026: it works.

NepaliPort portal home page
The NepaliPort portal: click “Visa On-arrival”.
First screen of the Visa on arrival form
First screen: passport country, number, date of birth, then “Proceed”.
Card Payment page of the portal
The “Card Payment” page: Submission ID + captcha to pay or check a payment.
ETA form
The ETA variant: same first screen, file reviewed before payment.
ETA Application Stopped, Daily Limit Reached message
The ETA has a daily quota: this message shows when it is reached.
Never pay twice for the same Submission ID. If the page crashes, wait, then check the payment status before retrying. Payments to the Nepalese government are non-refundable, and an incident in May 2026 left more than 800 travellers charged twice.
What about the “ETA”, the official site's “eVisa”? The same portal offers an Electronic Travel Authorization: same form, but immigration reviews your file before payment (a few hours to three working days), then you download a QR-coded authorisation under Digital Time Card → Print ETA. Valid 6 months. At the airport, it is the same direct walk as here. Useful if you want confirmation before leaving; otherwise paying the visa on arrival online is enough. Beware: the ETA has a daily application quota. If the portal says “Daily Limit Reached”, try again the next morning, Nepal time, or use the online Visa on Arrival instead.
