Before you leave
- Find the Nepalese embassy or consulate that covers your country: list of Nepal's diplomatic missions (32 embassies and 9 consulates-general; many cover several neighbouring countries), or the ministry's site mofa.gov.np.
- Fill in the online form on the “mission” portal: nepaliport.immigration.gov.np/onlinevisa-mission/application, picking that embassy in the first dropdown, and print it.
- Prepare: original passport valid 6 months with 2 blank pages, copy of the ID page, one passport photo, copy of your residence permit if you are not a citizen of the country where you apply.
- Pay the fee in local currency, the equivalent of USD 30, 50 or 125, by the means your embassy accepts (cash, cheque or bank transfer, it varies by mission).
- Submit in person, or by post with a prepaid return envelope where the embassy allows it. Check its website first: opening hours and postal rules differ from one mission to another.
- Processing: about 5 working days in most missions. Depending on the embassy, your passport comes back with the visa sticker in it, or without a sticker but with a QR-coded authorisation sent by email, to print. Either way, plan for the passport to be returned to you (in person or by prepaid envelope).
On arrival in Kathmandu
The self-service kiosks
The computers are on the right as you enter the hall. You type in your details (identity, passport, address in Nepal, duration), your photo is taken, the machine prints a form with a barcode. This is the longest queue when several flights land at once. The printer sometimes fails: take a photo of the final screen, it is accepted at the payment counter.
10 to 40 min depending on trafficThe payment counter
The payment counters are at the far left of the hall. You hand over the form (the duration, 15, 30 or 90 days, was chosen at the kiosk or online) and pay. US dollars in cash preferred; other major currencies accepted at the day's rate, card not always accepted.
5 to 20 minThe immigration desk
Passport and printed authorisation with its QR code. The officer scans it, checks that everything matches, takes your photo and fingerprints, sticks the visa in your passport unless the embassy already did, then stamps your entry.
5 to 10 minOn arrival, straight to the immigration desk with your passport and the printed authorisation.
