Fees
Fees
Same base fee everywhere: USD 30, 50 or 125 depending on the duration. Two nuances: online, a 3.5% card fee is added; embassies charge the equivalent in local currency, at their own rate.
Every duration is multiple entry at no extra cost: you can leave Nepal and come back as long as the visa runs. The duration counts from the day you enter.
Which duration should I pick?
For a short trip with fixed dates. If you hesitate with 30 days, take 30: the USD 20 difference costs far less than an extension, charged USD 45 minimum.
The right choice for up to 45 days in the country: 30 days + a 15-day extension = USD 95, cheaper than the 90-day visa.
As soon as you might stay more than 45 days: 30 days + a 30-day extension = USD 140, more than USD 125, plus half a day at the immigration office.
Extending in Nepal is still possible, at USD 3 per day with a 15-day minimum: see the procedure and the calculator.
Coming for a trek? A big trek is often 10 to 20 walking days, plus your days in Kathmandu and Pokhara and the odd flight or weather delay: the 30-day visa covers almost every case. Trek-by-trek durations on Trek Nepal, our companion site.
Where and how to pay
| Where | Accepted payment methods |
|---|---|
| Online, on the official portal | Visa, Mastercard, American Express or UnionPay card. Fee of 3.5% of the amount, or USD 1 if higher. Some banks block the payment: try another card or enable foreign payments in your banking app. |
| Kathmandu airport | US dollars in cash preferred: clean, untorn bills issued after 2013. Euros and other convertible currencies accepted at the day's rate, often a poor one. Card not always accepted. ATM and exchange counter in the hall. |
| Land border | US dollars in cash only, small bills. No reliable card terminal, and online payment cannot be relied on. |
| Nepalese embassy or consulate | The same amount in local currency, by the means the mission accepts: cash, cheque or bank transfer depending on the embassy. Check its visa page first. |

Most travellers
The visa on arrival
Issued at Kathmandu airport, in Pokhara, Bhairahawa and at the land border posts. Nothing is mandatory before you leave, but two steps can be done online and save you time at the airport.
10 min to 1 h 30See the visa on arrival
The eVisa (ETA)
Same form and same price as the visa on arrival paid online, with one difference: immigration reviews your file before you leave (a few hours to three working days) and sends you a QR-coded authorisation, valid 6 months. At the airport, the same direct walk to the immigration desk. Note: the number of eVisa applications accepted each day is capped, for all travellers combined.

The embassy visa
Obtained before departure from a Nepalese embassy or consulate, in person or by post. Same price, about 5 working days. Visa sticker in the passport or QR-coded authorisation, depending on the embassy, valid 6 months. Essential if your passport is not eligible for visa on arrival, or if you want to leave with peace of mind.
