The procedure, step by step

  1. Fill in the online form at nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/visa-processing/extension: passport, current visa, number of days wanted, address in Nepal. Note the submission number and print the summary (a screenshot works in a pinch).
  2. Make your photocopies before you come: passport ID page, visa page, entry stamp. Nearby shops charge 5 to 10 rupees a page.
  3. At the office: file check at the first counter, then payment at the cashier in rupees (keep the receipt), photo taken on the spot, passport drop-off.
  4. Collect the passport with the new stamp: the same day for a file submitted in the morning, the next working day otherwise. Check the new end date before leaving.

What to bring

  • Your original passport, still valid for 6 months
  • The printed summary of the online form, or at least its submission number
  • Photocopies: ID page, visa page, entry stamp
  • One 35 × 45 mm passport photo on a white background: not always requested, but 50 rupees (≈ €0.3) at the photographer next door saves a second trip
  • The fee in rupees: USD 45 for 15 days, USD 3 per extra day, + USD 25 for multiple entry, converted at the day's rate

How much does it cost?

Estimated total90 USD (≈ €80)

Estimate in dollars, paid in rupees at the rate posted by the office. Minimum charged: 15 days.

Before expiry, never after. The online form is filled in within the 15 days before your visa ends, and the extension starts from the expiry date: applying early never costs you a day. Once the date has passed it is an overstay: USD 5 per day fine on top of the fees, to be settled at the Department of Immigration before you can leave the country. Beyond 150 days of overstay, a fine of up to 50,000 rupees (≈ €290) and possible deportation.
150 days per calendar year, initial visa and extensions included. The counter resets on 1 January, so a stay straddling two years can exceed 150 days in total.
Through an agency? Trekking agencies offer to handle it for USD 10 to 20 extra. They prepare the file and queue for you, but you still have to show up at the office: the saving is the waiting time.
